ARRIVE ANCHORAGE, ALASKA
Arrive in Anchorage, where you are transferred to your hotel. Time permitting, begin a guided afternoon tour of Anchorage and the surrounding vicinity. Depending on your interests and subject to availability, your explorations may include a behind-the-scenes excursion through the Anchorage Museum; a visit to Earthquake Park to view the remnants of the devastating 1964 earthquake; an exploration of indigenous Alaskan art and culture that includes time for art-and-crafts shopping; or a visit to the home studio of famed artist Jon Van Zyle, creator of all Iditarod dogsled race posters since its inception in 1978.
Winterlake Lodge | View Magnificent Denali by Air
After breakfast, transfer to Lake Hood to board a privately chartered ski plane for a scenic flight to Winterlake Lodge on the south slopes of the Alaska Range. En route, take in stunning aerial vistas of Denali. Arrive at your lodge by mid-afternoon, settling into your private cabin before partaking of your choice of guided activities, including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and dogsledding as well as cooking and yoga/stretching classes. Tonight, savor a gourmet dinner, and then enjoy the relaxing comforts of your rustic luxury lodge, which overlooks a lake in a forest wilderness traversed by the famed Iditarod Trail.
Winterlake Lodge | Diverse Outdoor Adventures
Revel in two full days of your choice of guided outdoor activities, including snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and dogsledding on frozen Finger Lake in front of the lodge or on the Iditarod Trail. In warmer weather, options include a helicopter adventure, bear viewing or fishing. If you prefer Indoor activities, you may opt for a cooking class, learning to prepare Alaskan specialties; yoga or stretching classes; enjoying a massage; or simply relaxing with a good book, gazing out your lodge’s expansive lake-view window or soaking in the hot tub on the lodge’s rugged wooden deck.
Sheldon Chalet | Remote Wilderness Splendors
Today, fly by private helicopter directly from Winterlake Lodge to Sheldon Chalet, nestled deep in the dark-sky backcountry of Denali National Park. Listen during this leisurely flight as your pilot narrates a tour of the scenery passing below you, including Kahiltna Glacier, site of the seasonal Denali Basecamp for its brave visitors, as well as Mount Huntington. Arrive at Sheldon Chalet, one of the most unique properties on earth, built on a nunatak (rock outcropping), surrounded by massive glaciers and standing in the shadow of Denali, formerly Mount McKinley, the tallest mountain peak in North America. This evening, revel in the first of three nights watching for the spectacular northern lights, along with vibrant views of stars, planets and meteor showers.
Glacial Adventures & Aurora Borealis
Set out on two full days of discovery, choosing from a range of glacier-related activities, including snowshoe glacier trekking, crevasse exploration, snow-cavern spelunking, sledding runs, ice climbing and rappelling, rock climbing and cross-country skiing. Each evening, watch for the northern lights and other dazzling celestial phenomena from the outside decks or through the floor-to-ceiling windows of your amazing lodge.
