Day 1
Arrive San Francisco, California

Arrive in San Francisco, where your driver-guide meets you and transfers you to your hotel. Check in and then begin your California adventure, boarding a hybrid ferry to Alcatraz Island for a self-guided audio tour of its infamous prison-turned-museum. Nicknamed “The Rock,” Alcatraz once held a rogue’s gallery of notorious criminals, including Prohibition-era kingpin Al Capone and Robert Stroud, better known as “the Birdman of Alcatraz.” Enjoy views of the city skyline from a hilltop on the island, and note the lively bird species — gulls, herons, cormorant, egrets — that populate the skies above its craggy terrain. Then, head inside the penitentiary’s long-deserted cellblock and wander past former cells, the cafeteria and the guard’s office, guided by expert audio narration. Later, ferry back to San Francisco for an evening at leisure.

Then, embark together with a local guide on a pedal through the city, stopping at Crissy Field for choice views of San Francisco Bay, on your way up to the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Opened in 1937, the massive yet graceful bridge spans the 1.7 miles between San Francisco and Marin County with a roadway suspended from two towers, each 746 feet tall. Ride across this world-famous landmark to charming Sausalito, cycling at a leisurely pace to the center of town. Return to your hotel for an afternoon at leisure.
