DAY 3:
Tortuguero | Rainforest River Voyage

Today, rise early for a guided birding walk before voyaging down the slow-moving tropical rivers that define Tortuguero National Park, one of the last large, intact tropical rainforests in Central America. Sight wildlife in the thick flora — perhaps monkeys, sloths, river otters, caimans, iguanas or poison dart frogs. This region is also perfect for birders, showcasing a multitude of avian species. Later, explore the village of San Francisco. If time permits, you may also visit a neighborhood school (when in session) or join local children in a game of soccer.

DAY 4:
Tortuguero | Kayaking the Flooded Forest

This morning, head north by motorized boat to Caño Palma (Palm Canal) for an exciting kayak adventure, paddling to beguiling places in the richest biological ecosystem in Costa Rica, led by an expert local guide. If you prefer, choose the optional motorized boat excursion. Journey to the mouth of the river to learn about the Atlantic green sea turtles that thrive on Tortuguero’s shores. You may wander the beach where thousands of these gentle vegetarians return to nest each year on the same stretch of sand where they were born. After lunch back at the lodge, the remainder of your day is at leisure to relax, take your children on a garden walk or enjoy fun in the sun at the pool.

DAY 5:
Arenal/La Fortuna | Farm Tour & Volcano Views

Fly to Arenal. Upon arrival, travel to Finca Burio (Burio Farm) and meet the owner, Don Juan. Join him on a tour through the plantations to learn the benefits and uses of fruit you may never have seen. Keep an eye out for colorful local bird species and learn to process sugar cane at a trapiche (sugar mill). Next, sit down for an organic lunch, prepared for you by Don Juan’s wife, Doña Yamileth. Afterward, depart for a short drive to your hotel at the base of the Arenal Volcano. Marvel at the famed volcano’s near-perfect cone, which soars 5,357 feet above sea level.

DAY 6:
La Fortuna | Scenic Hanging Bridges

After breakfast, set out for the picturesque Arenal Hanging Bridges with your private guide. The site was designed to blend with the natural environment, while leaving the forest habitat virtually intact. As you walk, observe the diversity of flora and wildlife, set against imposing views of the volcano. Later, visit the Hidalgo family’s hot springs, a less-populated alternative to the overcrowded springs found elsewhere in the area. Tucked nearly a mile off the main road between Lake Arenal Dam and La Fortuna, the springs consist of five free-flowing pools amid a natural river gorge. Cool off after your dip with smoothies and cocktails made with delicious local ingredients, and then enjoy an authentic meal for your farewell dinner at a local restaurant.
