The Pyramids may be the cover stars of Egyptian history, but Luxor, which lies on the ancient capital of the pharaohs, is where the real story is told. It is surely impossible to wander the Valley of the Kings without feeling the awe that Howard Carter – the archaeologist who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun – felt when he laid eyes on the Boy King in 1922.

Tut is still here, of course, his resting place one of 65 such graves in this mountainous necropolis. So too is the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, a stunning testament to the ancient Egyptians’ architectural genius, and Karnak, the remarkable temple complex whose columns catch the sun’s rays on the Nile’s east bank.
