Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, Uganda

Deep in the verdant heart of Uganda lies Gorilla Forest Lodge – the only luxury lodge inside the gates of breathtakingly beautiful Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park. Around 1,000 mountain gorillas exist in the wild, and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to more than half of them, making this A&K Sanctuary unrivalled as a luxury lodge for gorilla trekking in Uganda. Reopened in June 2025 after a complete overhaul, the 10-suite property has been beautifully and eco-consciously redesigned in harmony with its natural surroundings. Its location is second to none – gorillas have been known to visit the grounds, and the brilliant forest rangers ensure sightings on every trek. As well as the headline-act primates, there are also guided walks through the lush and incredibly biodiverse rainforest to scenic waterfalls and organic spa treatments with jungle views, all followed by sundowners around the fire and memorable dinners in the warm glow of the dining room. Gorilla Forest Lodge also plays a vital role in saving mountain gorillas from extinction – every stay here funds A&K Philanthropy projects which support and conserve local communities, wildlife, and the Bwindi Forest itself.

THE SAFARI EXPERIENCE

The Safari Experience at Gorilla Forest Lodge

Enjoy French press coffee in the huge hillside suite of your Bwindi luxury lodge, listening to the constant soundtrack of birdsong and spotting colobus monkeys scampering in the trees, before you set off through the jungle in search of the king of the primates. The team at Gorilla Forest Lodge will ensure you are well kitted out: everyone gets gaiters, a backpack and sticks to help navigate the tricky terrain. The trek through dense, steep forest means a level of physical fitness is required. But all the exertion is worthwhile once you spend time with the incredible mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. The beauty of this A&K Sanctuary – and why it leads the pack when it comes to luxury lodges for gorilla trekking in Uganda – is its location inside the gates of national park. This means you’re closer to home than anyone else once you’ve marvelled at the gorillas’ family dynamics, and enjoyed a post-trek picnic lunch. Return to the newly revamped lodge for downtime, and leave your boots in the mud room to be cleaned, before a spa treatment to warm down after the morning’s exercise – the natural treatments here are accompanied by the sound of a gently burbling stream outside for maximum immersion in your surroundings. There are plenty of books for leafing through in the Explorer’s Lounge, and the Bush Boutique is stocked with African-crafted items: hand-painted T-shirts, bags in vibrant-colored fabrics echoing the kaleidoscopic local markets, and more. Locally rooted design is a core principle at Gorilla Forest Lodge, as seen in the banana-leaf wallpaper and beaded chandeliers created by women from the nearby village. Anyone keen to get back out into the forest can embark on a guided walk to Munyaga waterfall, ticking off the abundant species along the way (from forest hogs to African emerald cuckoo), or take a short stroll to the local female-run bike shop, amongst other projects set up by A&K Philanthropy. Sundowners back by the fire are a special moment, with long-time team member Wallen singing and playing a distinctive harp, followed by dinner in the softly lit restaurant. After such an active day, a soak in the round tub of your spacious and completely secluded bathroom awaits, with even more forest views on tap.

THE LODGE

A standout lodge in Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park

An elegant, eco-conscious 10-suite luxury hideaway

Sensationally situated on a hillside overlooking the jungle canopy, this newly revamped A&K Sanctuary is the most beautiful place to stay within Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park – making it a standout among the luxury lodges for gorilla trekking in Uganda. There’s a hidden-away feeling to the beautifully designed property, with expansive jungle views through the floor-to-ceiling windows and the sense that each chic suite is embedded in the mist-shrouded forest. Distinctive design elements using locally crafted materials root the lodge in its setting.

The 10 standalone suites are set apart amid the trees for added seclusion, each with a private viewing deck and sculptural hanging chairs from which you can watch monkeys, plus rare and wonderful birds and butterflies. Sunrise is breathtaking – pale pastel light, ethereal mist shrouding the canopy, the soundtrack of the primeval forest waking up. Beds are supremely comfortable canopied four-posters, and bathrooms have large round tubs for languorous soaking surrounded by nature.

The beating heart of the lodge is an indoor-outdoor lounge bar and restaurant space overlooking the rainforest, where earthy terracotta tones, deeply comfortable sofas, textured wall hangings and a double-height wood-beamed ceiling combine to create a contemporary jungle cocoon. In the evenings, our resident musician plays traditional African folk songs on a harp while guests drink sundowners and exchange gorilla tales around the campfire. Other facilities include a spa (with two treatment rooms overlooking a stream for facials and massages using organic products made in Africa by Healing Earth), a chic and well-stocked boutique selling locally made products and souvenirs, and the Explorer’s Lounge where you will find maps and a selection of books on the flora, fauna and culture of Bwindi and Uganda. With nature all around, you’ll want to be primed for any animal sightings: guests are supplied with Leica binoculars and there are spotting scopes on the decks

Following the sustainability-focused revamp in 2025, Gorilla Forest Lodge’s eco-conscious design and community-first approach to conservation mean it is a standard bearer for responsible travel in the region.

WILDLIFE & SURROUNDINGS

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest: Uganda's gorilla heartland

The best-located luxury lodge for gorilla treks

Dense, mountainous, lush, breathtakingly beautiful – and poetically named. Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is not, however, entirely impenetrable. Gorilla Forest Lodge provides the perfect point of entry into one of the most extraordinary landscapes in Africa; an area that’s home to around half the world's remaining population of mountain gorillas, the great apes with whom we share 98 per cent of our DNA. Among Bwindi’s mountain gorilla lodges, it is unrivalled as the only luxury option inside the national park gates. This means morning commutes to set off on treks to see these magnificent and critically endangered creatures are measured in minutes, not half-hour or hour-long drives. Hike through farmland and foliage (it could take anything from 60 minutes to several hours to reach the gorillas, depending on their location that day) to spend an intimate hour watching their loving, complex family dramas play out at your feet. While seeing the gorillas is undoubtedly a highlight of the excursion, exploring the living, breathing undergrowth of such a pristine wilderness on a vigorous hike is also unforgettable, through terrain that spans giant ferns, stands of bamboo and larger hardwoods, with brightly fluttering butterflies and colorful flashes of bird plumage all around.

A mist-topped tangle of treetops, strangling roots and coiling ferns, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the success stories of African conservation. Once the site of civil unrest, today it is a mysterious wonderland echoing with the call of 20 species of primate, including golden monkeys – and around 500 mountain gorillas, Africa’s largest habituated population. It’s one of the few forests in Africa known to have both gorillas and chimpanzees in the same ecosystem. The large primeval forest – located in the southwestern corner of Uganda – is recognised by UNESCO for its immense biological significance, and has been designated a national park since 1991 in order to protect its precious habitats. Remote and wildly rugged, the forest is on the western brand of the East African Rift and reaches elevations of more than 8,500ft, which explains its romantic mist-shrouded appearance.
