Luxury Vacations in Serbia
In some ways, Serbia is a mystery package; a giant at the heart of the Balkan peninsula, little known beyond its own frontiers. That hasn’t always been the case, however.
When the Orient Express launched in 1885, Belgrade was one of its key stops, drawing in travellers from Paris bound for Istanbul. Plenty of that mystique lingers now that the city is Serbia’s capital, the ramparts of its largely Ottoman Kalemegdan Fortress glaring at the junction of the Danube and Sava; the streets behind abuzz with churches and cafes, cool restaurants and cocktail bars. Meanwhile, second city Novi Sad is expanding rapidly and impressively on its Danube bank, with Subotica adding a similar swathe of spires and splendor in the north, just beneath the border with Hungary. Winter in Serbia is an artform, Kopaonik rising high as the foremost Balkan ski resort, where huddles of snow-dusted fir trees flank peaceful runs with good infrastructure.
