The adage about good things coming in small packages can certainly be applied to the three Baltic nations.

There are clear similarities between Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania – one being the rich medieval heritage of their major cities, the other being their relatively compact sizes. And yet, there are significant differences too – individual styles and stories that only become apparent with closer inspection. Lithuania will happily regale you with its tale – in the gorgeous neoclassical cathedral of its capital Vilnius; in the orange-tiled architectural whimsy of the second city, Kaunas, where a 14th-century castle stands firm. Then there is the third city, Klaipeda, a historically important port that clings to the Baltic Sea, acting as a photogenic gateway to both the narrow sandbar of the Curonian Spit and the fresh-water lagoon that wells behind it.
