For foodies, Piedmont in northwest Italy is synonymous with wine and truffles and the quality of both is reason enough to visit.

The Slow Food movement was born here in the 1980s and the excellent local produce can be sampled at both rural trattorias and Michelin-starred restaurants such as Piazza Duomo in Alba, a showcase for Barolo and Barbaresco wines from the Ceretto winery, whose tasting room is a vast dome suspended over the terraced hillside. Leading producer Roberto Ceretto has also helped to put the region on the map by commissioning site-specific art from Francesco Clemente (at Piazzo Duomo) and Sol LeWitt and David Tremlett (at the colorful Barolo Chapel) and there is more art in the remote hamlet of Borgata Lunetta and the repurposed factories and palaces of newly vibrant Turin. The beautiful countryside, meanwhile, including the UNESCO-protected wine region of Langhe-Roero and Monferrato, and Lago Orta in the north-east, is ideal for hiking and biking.
