Days 2-3
Rome | Eternal City

See the imposing Colosseum, commissioned by Emperor Vespasian. The stadium accommodated up to 50,000 spectators, who came to view the gladiatorial battles that lasted up to 100 days. Continue to the Roman Forum, which began as a valley between four of Rome’s seven original hills and eventually became a dense complex of structures. Today it is unsheltered and uncovered and appears as a large patchwork of ruined temples, set amidst the remains of churches and archways. Then, visit Palatine Hill, site of the mythical founding of Rome. See the House of Livia, wife of Augustus, with its many wall paintings, and the Domus Flavia, with its exquisite marble. The following day, visit Vatican City. See the Vatican Museums, part of the Papal Residence, which is estimated to contain 1,400 rooms, chapels and galleries filled with precious art, maps, sculptures and antiquities. However, the most breathtaking masterpiece is Michelangelo's frescoed ceiling in the Sistine Chapel. At the center of the Vatican lies the vast Basilica of St. Peter; pass the colorfully adorned Swiss Guard, seeing the cathedral’s mix of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, formed under the hands of masters.

Sorrento | Pompeii & the Amalfi Coast

Transfer to Sorrento, stopping en route at the ruins of Pompeii, where you witness remnants of its luxurious mansions, modest houses, markets, streets, public baths, theaters and temples as well as beautiful wall murals and floor mosaics. Upon arrival in Sorrento near the picturesque Amalfi Coast, check in to your hotel. The following day, skirt the Amalfi coastline, once reachable only by mule. See Positano, known for its gleaming, colorful houses that all but cascade down the steep hillside. Continue to Amalfi, the coast’s largest town, taking note of the Duomo, which is fronted by a beautifully colored 13th-century facade. Also, enjoy the area by sea as you spend a day aboard a private boat visiting Capri and its stunning surroundings.

Savelletri | Discovering Puglia

Travel by private car to the Puglia region in southern Italy. Dotted with sleepy fishing villages, beaches and olive groves, it is home to ancient carved rock dwellings, white stone villages and the curious trulli houses of Alberobello. Continue to your hotel in Savelletri, spending the rest of the day at leisure. The next day, explore the town of Matera, famed for the "Sassi di Matera" ("stones of Matera"), which originate from a prehistoric (troglodyte) settlement. Interestingly, its houses are dug into the calcareous rock itself and some streets are located on the rooftops of other houses. The following day, discover the Valle d’Itria. Begin the day with stops in Cisternino and Locorotondo, taking time to explore the narrow streets and see the iconic whitewashed stone buildings with cool, shaded, cave-like interiors. Continue with a visit to a local cheese producer, where you learn how cheeses are made, followed by a tasting. Next, stop to explore Alberobello, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with the distinct trulli homes, which feature conical roofs made of calcareous stone slabs laid in concentric circles.
