Arrive San José, Costa Rica
Arrive in San José, the capital of Costa Rica, where you are met and transferred to your hotel. Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure.
Monteverde | Teeming Ecological Sanctuary
Drive to Monteverde this morning, a community of dairy farmers and naturalists surrounded by cloud forest. Upon arrival, walk along lush, forested trails of the Curi-Cancha Reserve, seeing waterfalls, coffee and banana plantations, and upward of 150 species of birds. You may also encounter coatimundis, sloths, agoutis, porcupines and white-faced monkeys as well as butterflies.
Monteverde | Into the Cloud Forest
Today, visit the reserve’s Butterfly Garden, to observe a wide variety of colorful native species fluttering about its four spacious enclosures. Also see scorpions, spiders and many species of tropical insects. Proceed to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, which features six distinct, wildlife-rich ecological zones. Keep your camera at the ready, as you may spot the resplendent Quetzal as well as three-wattled bellbirds, emerald toucanets, and white-faced and howler monkeys. Then, stop to watch the diverse and plentiful hummingbirds that flock to feeders at the Hummingbird Gallery.
Arenal / Tortuguero | Hanging Bridges & Volcano Views
Travel by land and boat to reach the Arenal region where you walk the Arenal Hanging Bridges for a bird’s-eye view at or above the treetops. On ground level, walk along beautiful trails and, weather permitting, enjoy views of Arenal Volcano. Sit down to a family-style lunch at Ecotermales La Fortuna, and take a swim or soak in the natural hot springs on site. This afternoon, fly to Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, arriving in charming Tortuguero to explore its narrow, tranquil creeks by boat, in search of abundant wildlife.
Tortuguero | Far More than Sea Turtles
Head by boat to Tortuguero National Park, home to howler monkeys, three-toed sloths, river otters, caimans, lizards and the strawberry poison dart frog. Later, stop at Tortuguero Village, visiting its school if it’s in session. Learn the history of the village as you stroll past colorful Afro-Caribbean homes and meet with locals to learn about their way of life. Continue to the Sea Turtle Conservancy to gain insight into how species lay their eggs on Tortuguero Beach. During your visit, you have the opportunity to hear about the ongoing, impactful studies and the conservation efforts that are underway. Enjoy a candlelit barbeque dinner on the banks of the Tortuguero River.
Osa Peninsula | Time to Relax
Cross the Tortuguero River by boat and fly to the Osa Peninsula — home to Corcovado National Park — where you check in to your award-winning eco-lodge. Set within a 1,000-acre lowland tropical rainforest reserve, your accommodations overlook Golfo Dulce and the Pacific Ocean. Enjoy the rest of your day at leisure.
Osa Peninsula | Rainforest Explorations
