Delhi | Discovering the Old & the New
Begin your exploration of Delhi, driving past the massive sandstone Red Fort en route to the great Jama Masjid, the largest and most important mosque in India. Once there, move among locals engaged in daily prayer, and view the mosque’s two soaring minarets. Then, set off on an exciting rickshaw ride through the narrow alleys of Chandni Chowk bazaar, one of the oldest and busiest markets in Delhi, frequented by locals and visitors alike. Stop for a moment to reflect on the price of India’s independence at Raj Ghat, a small memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi. After lunch at a local restaurant, tour New Delhi, including Humayun’s Tomb, an architectural precursor of the Taj Mahal. Also view the India Gate, a triumphal arch more than 130 feet tall; drive along the Rajpath, or King’s Way, a broad ceremonial boulevard; and see the presidential residence of Rashtrapati Bhawan. Tonight, gather for a cocktail and welcome dinner at your hotel.
Udaipur | Romantic, Wistful & Serene
After a morning at leisure, fly to Udaipur, a city built around sparkling clear blue lakes, and transfer to your modern lakeside palace hotel. This evening, embark on a sunset cruise on placid Lake Pichola, sailing past its picturesque ghats and palaces, including the 17th-century water palace of Jag Mandir, also known as the Lake Garden Palace. View this magnificent monument with its domes, marble pillars and fountains as well as its special approach from the water — a row of marble elephants that seem to be guarding the island.
Udaipur | Special Cooking Demonstration
Continue your exploration of Udaipur, beginning with the spectacular City Palace, a marble complex of palace and galleries that offers unforgettable views of Lake Pichola. Visit the Crystal Gallery, located in Fateh Prakash Palace, to browse an exquisite collection of priceless Rajput miniature paintings, crystal objets d’art and fine furniture. Discover the Sahelion Ki Bari (Garden of the Maids of Honor) to stroll its shady walks. Next enjoy a cooking demonstration and lunch at a local restaurant followed by an afternoon at leisure.
Jaipur | Private Access to Royal Chambers
This morning, fly to Jaipur, transfer to your hotel, a luxurious resort nestled on 32 acres of gardens, and settle in. Later this afternoon, set out to explore the “Pink City,” named for its use of local pink plastered stone. Tour the City Palace, a complex including the ornate Mubarak Mahal palace, and enjoy special private access to rooms not usually open to the public in a section still used by the royal family that owns it. Proceed to Jantar Mantar, an astronomical observation site built in the early 18th century, to view its precise instruments for measuring “the harmony of heavens.”
Jaipur | Inside the Amber Fort
Today, begin with a photo stop at what is perhaps Jaipur’s most famous building, Hawa Mahal, or the Palace of Winds, which was built expressly to allow ladies of the palace to view the street from behind artfully designed screens without being seen. Then, proceed to explore Amber Fort, one of the finest examples of a fort palace, built to be similar in style to the surrounding, richly decorated Mughal courts. Enjoy lunch at a distinctive local restaurant, and then enjoy the rest of the day at your leisure.
Agra | Visions of the Taj Mahal
Journey to Agra, a one-time Mughal capital and arrive at your hotel, a sanctuary of contemporary elegance offering views of the iconic Taj Mahal. Later, visit the Taj Mahal up close to marvel at its perfect symmetry and proportions, and watch how the light from the setting sun plays across its detailed marble surfaces. Return to the hotel with your Resident Tour Director and fellow guests for a cocktail and farewell dinner.
Agra | Citadel in the Heart of the City
Start your day early, making a follow-up visit the Taj Mahal to see how the sunrise colors its delicately carved façade. Return to the hotel for breakfast before setting out on a tour of Agra, visiting Agra Fort, an imposing sandstone citadel that lies on the bend of the River Yamuna, almost in the heart of the city. Later, drive to Delhi, enjoying a packed lunch en route, arriving around midday. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel, and then spend the remainder of the day at your leisure.
