Meet in Strasbourg and transfer to gracious 'La Nouvelle Etoile,' moored in historic Nancy. During a welcome reception, enjoy a short cruise to Laneuville before a gourmet dinner on board.
The morning cruise offers an excellent opportunity for walking or cycling along the towpath. After lunch, tour Nancy, former capital of the Duchy of Lorraine. See Place Stanislas, a pedestrianized 18th-century square and UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visit Musée de l'École, devoted to the Art Nouveau movement dating from 1901.
Visit a local crystal maker to see resident craftsmen at work. Continue to Sarrebourg and Chapelle des Cordeliers, which boasts exceptional stained glass windows created by renowned artist Marc Chagall, including the famous "La Paix" (Peace) window.
The cruise route continues through the Vosges Mountains today, taking 'La Nouvelle Etoile' through two dramatic tunnels. Experience the Arzviller Lift, constructed in 1969. This amazing engineering feat enables barges to bypass the full-day's journey (through a previously-used series of 17 locks) in only four minutes. Moor in Lutzelbourg tonight.
Cruise to Saverne with another opportunity to walk or cycle the canalside towpath. After lunch, travel along the Route des Vins d'Alsace for a tasting at a local vineyard. Continue to charming Obernai. Situated on the eastern slopes of the Vosges, this typical Alsatian town has medieval streets bordered by magnificent half-timbered houses.
After a final cruise to Strasbourg, there is time to explore the city's beautifully-preserved center. See the famous Gothic cathedral and Petite France district. Visit the Musée des Beaux-Arts, formerly a Baroque palace, with its collection of old masters. The barge hosts a gala farewell dinner this evening.
After breakfast, the program concludes in Strasbourg.
Route runs in reverse on alternate weeks and may differ on selected cruise dates.
