Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania

Here, on the doorstep of the largest inactive volcanic caldera in the world, the simple meets the sublime. Just 10 impeccable, uncomplicated tented suites make up this luxury Ngorongoro Crater camp, giving easy access to the great caldera that is home to thousands of animals – among them, the largest of the remaining bull tusker elephants in Africa. Newly refreshed with a light-touch design and in an elevated setting with far-reaching views of the Serengeti plains, Ngorongoro Crater Camp has an authentic safari feel – fitting given that unforgettable game drives to spot all of the Big Five are a highlight of a stay here. Although even when you’re not on a game drive you may well see giraffe families wandering past. Other immersive experiences at this Ngorongoro Crater luxury camp include a visit to an authentic Maasai boma and seasonal trips to Ndutu Plains – the Great Migration calving ground, where baby wildebeest and zebra find their feet among the herds from December to March. Our earliest upright ancestors are thought to have taken their first steps in these parts some 3.6 million years ago and the sense of wonder they doubtless felt is palpable today.

THE CAMP

An intimate camp on the doorstep of Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater

Charmingly low-impact camp with horizon-stretching savannah views

The setting of this luxury Ngorongoro Crater camp, on a hillside overlooking the Tanzanian plains, is enchanting. Newly refreshed and with just 10 elegant tented suites, it has an intimate feel, yet what is on the doorstep is truly epic in scale. The local Maasai people have a deep connection with Ngorongoro Crater – the world’s largest inactive, intact, unfilled volcanic caldera – and the life it encloses and sustains. Indeed, the name “Ngorongoro" refers to the sound made by cow bells as the Maasai herders lead their cattle through this incredible wilderness which is home to more than 25,000 individual animals.

A light-touch, sustainable approach was key in the recent revamp: not a tree was felled in the construction, Maasai community members played an integral role throughout the build, and the camp is now 90 percent solar-powered. Materials such as rippling canvas, billowing white curtains and polished teak give a timeless, authentic safari feel – yet this is a property rooted in 21st-century sensibilities. As well as being low-impact, Ngorongoro Crater Camp is a celebration of deeply considered quiet luxury, with interiors created in collaboration with a local East African design studio. In homage to the iconic animals that you will witness in their natural caldera habitat, monochrome portraits lining the camp’s communal areas depict the most regularly sighted neighbors – zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, elephants, lions and leopards. The colors and textures of the breeze-cooled main tent are inspired by nature, with comfortable armchairs and sofas for lounging and soaking up the authentic, close-to-nature feel. There’s also a Bush Boutique, which sells a curation of African-crafted items, and the adjoining open-sided circular bar and boma is an excellent spot for post-game drive gatherings. Watch in awe as the sun sinks below the horizon in a blaze of orange (the camp is cleverly oriented to maximize sunset views) and a campfire crackles to life – a magical sight and sound. In keeping with the immersive setting, each morning the chorus of birdlife serves as your morning alarm call. What better way to ease into the day in a place where time seems to have stood still?

WILDLIFE & SURROUNDINGS

The wondrous appeal of the Ngorongoro Crater

Discover the world's most wildlife-rich caldera

Where to begin? About three million years ago, when a volcano erupted so violently that it collapsed upon itself, creating a caldera 2,000 feet deep over an area of 160 square miles. This is Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest inactive, intact, unfilled volcanic caldera – unfilled, that is, by anything other than animals: between 25,000 and 30,000 of them, give or take, including all of the Big Five. Today, the crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and many consider it to be the eighth wonder of the world. It is one of several cauldron-like calderas and conical volcanoes that make up the wonderfully named Crater Highlands geological region of northeastern Tanzania. Refreshed and in a new elevated position, A&K Sanctuary’s luxury Ngorongoro Crater Camp is brilliantly located to witness the tableau of iconic African animals roaming the plains below – the wide-open views of acacia-dotted grasslands are a taster of what’s in store in the caldera itself, whose access gate is just a 15-minute drive away.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area of which the crater is part comprises a magnificently diverse landscape – highland plains, savannah, woodland and forest – stretching from the Serengeti National Park to the eastern branch of the Great Rift Valley. The area is significant for the conservation of biodiversity due to the healthy concentration of wildlife in the Ngorongoro Crater, where endangered species such as black rhino can be spotted, and the wildebeest migration across the northern plains.

As well as being on the doorstep of the timeless sights of the Ngorongoro Crater, the camp’s new position is convenient for access to Ndutu Plains, where seasonal game drives can be arranged to experience the marvel of wildebeest calving season (late December to March). Epic wildlife aside, other highlights that elevate a stay at Ngorongoro Crater Camp above your standard African safari include seeing the prehistoric paintings at Nasera rock, the crescent-shaped black dunes of the Shifting Sands and the three-million-year-old fossils at Olduvai Gorge Museum. Also nearby is a small, authentic Maasai boma where guests can learn about the lives of the semi-nomadic pastoralists who co-exist alongside such incredible wildlife.
