Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

The Great Migration – as its name suggests – is a process, not a moment, one that continues in a year-round cycle. A luxury mobile camp tracking the Great Migration, Kichakani Camp exists in two locations in different parts of the Serengeti National Park. This means guests can see two quite distinct moments in this cycle – the Mara River crossing, when million-strong herds of wildebeest and zebra reach the water and the snapping crocodiles laying there in wait, is one of them; the no less extraordinary wildebeest calving season in the south of the park is the other. Redolent of the Golden Age of safari – though with a good many more up-to-date flourishes – this luxury camp following the Serengeti’s Great Migration is a tented property cut on classic lines. Delicious picnic lunches out in the bush and surprisingly refreshing bucket showers back at camp after a day of exhilarating game drives enhance the feeling of intrepidness in the wild. Such adventures are timeless, fitting given that they revolve around a staggering natural phenomenon that’s been happening for hundreds of thousands of years.

THE SAFARI EXPERIENCE

The Safari Experience at Kichakani Camp

The beauty of this luxury mobile camp that follows the path of the Great Migration is its close-to-nature, authentic safari set-up. It is seasonally pitched in two spectacular locations in Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park. In the northern site, where it’s based from June to November, there’s rolling savannah as far as the eye can see; and action-packed days following thousand-strong herds of wildebeest as they cross the Mara River make you feel as if you, too, are part of this extraordinary natural phenomenon – one that’s been happening without fail for many millennia. That feeling continues round the clock, as the animals can be heard moving around and bellowing throughout the night – nature’s white noise as you camp out in an enviable position slap-bang in the middle of one of its greatest sights. In the south, it’s a story of birth from December to March, with baby zebras, impalas and wildebeest wobbling about, and unforgettable sunrises over the rocky terrain as hawks, eagles and other raptors can be spotted in the skies. In both locations of this Serengeti Great Migration luxury camp, morning coffee is delivered to your tent by intuitive room attendants – the first interaction of the day, and one of many with the exceptional members of staff, from the housekeepers to the guides, that make Kichakani’s guests feel particularly well looked after. Lunch can be eaten as a picnic in the bush for full immersion in the wilderness, and so you never miss a moment of this seasonal wildlife experience. Sundowners are sipped from the mobile gin bar set up by the boma back at camp as Chuck Berry and Fats Domino hits play from the gramophone – it’s not uncommon for guests to get up and dance to tunes such as ‘Blueberry Hill. Most unique of all are the rustic-chic bucket showers enjoyed after a full day of adventuring – the room attendants are experts at getting the perfect water temperature. Three-course dinners in the safari-chic mess tent are followed by nightcaps under the stars as everyone exchanges stories around the crackling fire pit, or simply gazes at the inky skies in silent wonder. When the flames have turned to embers and it’s time to turn in, staff will walk you back to your tent – a gentle reminder that you are out here in the wilds, and safaris don’t get more authentic than this.

THE CAMP

A luxury camp in Serengeti National Park

Dual-location mobile camp pitched perfectly for the Great Migration

The name “Kichakani” is Swahili for “in the bush”, and this is exactly where you’ll find yourself at this extraordinary luxury mobile camp amid the Great Migration, which celebrates the ultimate remote, close-to-nature experience. With the choice of two locations in the north and south of Tanzania’s Serengeti National Park, guests can opt for the best time to visit depending on their preferences. The northern location showcases an incredible view of wildebeest crossing the Mara River during the Great Migration from June to November, while the southern location enjoys a prime position for observing wildebeest calves, typically between December and March.

Kichakani Camp takes the traditional tented camping experience to luxurious new heights, offering a true immersion into the life of roaming 19th-century explorers, albeit with a few chic and sustainability-driven 21st-century tweaks. In an authentic touch, each ensuite bathroom in the 10 classic canvas tents features a traditional bucket shower, filled to the perfect temperature by a dedicated room attendant – it feels particularly refreshing after an exhilarating day of 4x4 game drives tracking the thundering herds. The stylish furniture, including handcrafted luggage, mid-century modern chairs and characterful cabinets, is all designed to be perfectly portable, and the large open-fronted communal tents are pitched to provide a panoramic setting for relaxing afternoons and atmospheric sundowners. Other touches such as an old-school gramophone playing classic hits further amps up the feeling of being transported to a different time; while playful design elements add a sense of fun – a chandelier made of torches hangs from billowing fabric above the lounge area. In the evenings, guests gather on the stools and in the deeply comfortable sofas arranged around the well-stocked corner bar, before candlelit suppers in the open-sided mess tent – all the better to hear the after-dark sounds of the bush. Post dinner, the traditional fire pit beckons, where guests swap stories under starry skies and listen to passionate guides share their knowledge of wildlife encounters and local legends. This enchanting light-touch home in the bush promises unforgettable up-close encounters.

WILDLIFE & SURROUNDINGS

Front-row views of the Serengeti's Great Migration

Explore two sides of the Serengeti

You’ll find Kichakani Camp amid the widescreen, unspoilt, acacia-dotted grandeur of the Serengeti National Park, though precisely which bit of the bush you’ll be in will depend on the time of year. This Great Migration luxury mobile camp has two locations, one in the north, one in the south, to be in pole position for the Mara River crossing and for the Serengeti’s wildebeest calving season. Simply put, it is always in the right place at the right time – and the feeling of being totally immersed in nature is remarkable. It’s not unusual for the camp to be surrounded by thousands of wildebeest at night. Hearing their grunts and bellows through the canvas walls of your tent is all part of the experience.

As for the park itself, it is widely considered the most magnificent in all of Africa – a prime example of pristine wilderness and one of the most scientifically significant ecosystems on earth. At 5,700 square miles of sloping grassland, rolling savannah, rocky outcrops (known as kopje), forest and woodlands, it is the largest park in Tanzania and also the oldest – it was established in 1951, and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1981. The Mara River, the only permanent water source in the dry season, carves a path through the northern part of the park, and is a lifeline for the huge concentration of animals that inhabit the region. But it is also the scene of many animals’ demise during the high-stakes river crossings of the Great Migration. Along with the Masai Mara National Reserve, over the border in Kenya to the north, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area to the southwest – plus a handful of smaller game reserves – Serengeti National Park forms a protected corridor for this annual 620-mile mass migration of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles and eland in search of fresh grass and water. The untouched feel of the Serengeti ecosystem is due to the fact that its weather patterns, flora and fauna are believed to have changed little over a million years – and you certainly sense that when witnessing one of its sky-spanning golden sunsets from Kichakani Camp.
