Okavango Delta, Botswana

This intimate, handcrafted property sets the bar for luxury safari camps in the Okavango Delta. Chief’s Camp is set on the extravagantly beautiful Chief’s Island amid the vast Moremi Game Reserve, one of the most predator-dense wildlife areas in Africa. The island’s days as a royal hunting ground (hence its name) are over, but its beauty remains and the wildlife flourishes. In a luxuriantly leafy spot beside the water, this Moremi Game Reserve luxury camp is quite literally surrounded by what may well be the richest concentration of animals in Botswana, year-round. Here in the heart of the UNESCO-protected Okavango Delta, dry season is the best time to see lions, cheetahs and other big cats; then as water levels rise, grazing animals such as elephants, impalas and giraffes flock to the area – the island is the ideal spot for wildlife to retreat to as they seek higher ground. The abundance of birdlife is equally impressive. Seasonal excursions in traditional mokoro canoes, a dedicated children’s retreat, organic spa treatments and a pool make this an all-round crowd pleaser for your Chief’s Island Okavango safari.

THE SAFARI EXPERIENCE

The Safari Experience at Chief’s Camp

Pulse-quickening game viewing starts the minute you touch down here, as guides stop for any wildlife sightings on your transfer from the airstrip. A brilliantly located luxury safari camp in the Okavango Delta, Chief’s Camp is in a prime spot on Chief’s Island, known as having one of the best concentrations of animals in the region. Days in this canvas-and-wood sanctuary unfold in tandem with the abundant nature. Spot elephants wandering by as you sip morning coffee on your private deck, before your friendly guide arrives to pick you up for the first game drive. This island is known as the predator capital of Africa, so it’s likely you’ll see big cats (lions, cheetahs, leopards…) as well as plains game – from leaping impala to leggy giraffes. The Moremi Game Reserve, in which Chief’s Camp is located, has one of the world’s last remaining viable populations of African wild dogs. Also known as painted dogs and characterised by their fast-paced hunts, they often roam in large packs, and are particularly active around Chief’s Island. Out in the flooded wetlands, seasonal mokoro trips in a traditional dugout canoe offer a more serene wildlife-spotting experience – bar the odd half-submerged hippo and sunbathing crocodile – as keen birdwatchers get the chance to see fish eagles, bee-eaters and more. Lunch back at camp might include local dishes such as butternut soup with morogo leaves, then the afternoon is the time to fit in a spa treatment, dip in the pool or workout in the bush gym – or perhaps browse the shelves of the Bush Boutique and examine the bone clones in the Explorer’s Room. Families with children will love the arts and crafts in the kids’ room. As the day draws to a close, drinks are set up in the bush so everyone can take a moment to kick back and enjoy the delta’s extraordinary neon-orange sunsets. Dinners served at this Moremi Game Reserve luxury camp have an added fun element that could be build-your-own pizza or a barbecue by the boma as the joyous sound of the staff singing carries out into the inky stillness. And here in the magical, unspoilt African wilderness, the stargazing is epic – ask the brilliant team to point out the constellations to you.

THE CAMP

A low-impact luxury camp with epic Okavango Delta views

Handbuilt wooden camp overlooking the delta

Woody, luminous, airy, with high ceilings, exposed beams and tidily thatched roofs – this is a beautifully executed contemporary take on a luxury safari camp in the Okavango Delta. Located on the north edge of Chief’s Island, stilted Chief’s Camp overlooks the sprawling waterways of the delta and its rich rollcall of wildlife, giving guests front-row seats to the permanent natural spectacle that plays out just beyond the terrace.

Though its rich royal heritage is referenced throughout (Chief’s Island is so called because it was once the hunting ground of the Batawana chief Moremi), the camp today embraces a contemporary spin on classic safari style. Wood is used generously, from the jackalberry logs that were traditionally hollowed out to make mokoros (canoes), to the whitewoods used to fashion the main bar where sundowners are served. Tactile woven rugs and sumptuous seating soften the living areas, with beaded chandeliers and wall-hangings rooting the decor in local craftsmanship. The boma is the natural gathering place for memorable evenings such as barbecue night, when traditional dishes come with a side order of stargazing.

Accommodation is in 10 private thatched pavilions and the two-bedroom Geoffrey Kent Suite – all of which have their own private wraparound terrace with a close-to-nature outdoor shower, a plunge pool and panoramic views, so wildlife sightings are never far away. These pavilions and suites are among the largest in the Okavango Delta, and air-conditioning over the beds makes staying here even more comfortable. Other creature comforts include a Nespresso machine for morning coffee – sipped on your private deck as elephants amble by. If the sights and sounds of the Okavango aren’t soothing enough, the on-site spa offers environmentally conscious Healing Earth treatments, rejuvenating facials, and therapeutic remedies to help guests fully unwind – with views of the plains as an added mood booster. The main pool has a large deck and sunloungers, and the fully equipped bush gym allows you to maintain a workout routine, plus there’s a Bush Boutique for gift browsing and an Explorer’s Lounge for learning more about the extraordinary setting. For families travelling with children, a games room and interactive nature lessons will keep younger guests entertained and engaged.

WILDLIFE & SURROUNDINGS

An oasis in the heart of the Okavango Delta

Wildlife-rich flood plains and seasonal waterways

Chief’s Island is one of the largest and most historically significant islands in the Moremi Game Reserve – located in the heart of the UNESCO-listed Okavango Delta, the largest inland delta on earth. It gets its name from its time as the hunting ground of a Batawana chief, and enjoys its lofty position above the fluctuating water levels due to tectonic activity – which means it’s a sensational setting for surveying the drama of the surrounding wetlands. It was the Batawana people who first turned this area into a reserve where animals are protected, and now wildlife flourishes here. Named in honor of Chief Moremi II, it was the first such reserve in the Okavango Delta, serving as a model for eco-tourism in Botswana.

The terrain is made up of mopane woodland, acacia forest and floodplains. The grassy plains flood seasonally and, between May and September, are in most years transformed into a 5,800-square-mile patchwork of winding waterways, lily-scattered lagoons and tiny islands, teeming with the wildlife which synchronizes its behavior to the flood – elephants, lions and resident and migratory birds. This large oasis is all thanks to the Okavango River – the lifeblood of the delta – which flows from the mountains of Angola almost 1,000 miles to the west. The Okavango is notable as one of the few interior delta systems in the world that does not flow directly into an ocean or sea. Seasonal transformations aside, the reserve offers excellent game viewing year-round, and is home to many endangered species such as cheetah, African wild dog and black and white rhino. Around 500 species of bird, from forest dwellers to waterside waders, and 1,000 species of plant have been recorded in the rich and unspoilt ecosystem of this corner of Botswana.

Chief’s Camp is a thatched and stilted hideaway on the edge of a much-used watering hole on the north of Chief’s Island, so the wildlife sightings are round-the-clock. As a luxury camp in the Moremi Game Reserve, it’s an oasis within this oasis, where a boutique experience meets grand-scale wilderness.
