When to Visit for the Ultimate Safari Experience
January to March
One of the best times for a safari in Tanzania, January to March coincides with the Great Migration's calving season in the southern Serengeti, when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest give birth across the plains. January and February are also ideal for visiting South Africa. Cape Town enjoys hot, dry weather cooled by ocean breezes, while March brings excellent wildlife viewing in Greater Kruger National Park and the Sabi Sands, as animals gather around diminishing water sources.
April to June
East Africa's long rains mean some camps and lodges in Kenya and Tanzania close seasonally. However, the Maasai Mara remains rewarding in May, with strong wildlife viewing and fewer visitors. In Southern Africa, Victoria Falls reaches peak flow, creating some of the year's most dramatic scenery.
July to September
Widely considered one of the best times for an African safari. Millions of wildebeest and zebra gather in Tanzania's Serengeti before the Great Migration moves into Kenya's Maasai Mara from August. Botswana's Okavango Delta is at its wildlife-rich peak, while Rwanda and Uganda offer excellent gorilla trekking. Along South Africa's coast, whales arrive to calve in sheltered waters.
October to December
Wildlife viewing remains excellent in Tanzania's Serengeti, while migratory birds return from November as the landscape becomes lush and green. In Botswana, seasonal rains transform the Makgadikgadi Pans and trigger the zebra migration, one of Africa's longest land migrations. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda is also rewarding at this time of year.
