Luxury Vacations in the Italian Riviera
The Italian Riviera is the strip of coastline that curves from France to Italy via Genoa and is best known for the diminutive harbor lined with pastel-coloured houses, high-end boutiques and superyachts that is Portofino — a firm favourite of the jet set since the 1960s.
Yet the Ligurian coast also encompasses other curiosities such as the Abbazia of San Fruttuoso, a Romanesque abbey with a 16th-century watchtower between Portofino and Camogli, which can only be reached by boat or by hiking through the wooded nature reserve that surrounds it; behind it, Trattoria Da Laura serves the best pesto in Italy. Then there are the Cinque Terre: the five villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, with their similarly multicolored houses, terraced hillsides planted with olives and vines and domed churches, that together were granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 1997. Tuscany is a one-hour drive south.
