Luxury Vacations in Latvia
On the white-sand beaches of Jūrmala, which stretch as far as the eye can see, amber washes up on the shore and classical music spills out of a nearby concert hall.
Wooden cabins lie hidden among the pine trees and small streets lead past a confection of faded Art Nouveau houses. Set on the Baltic Sea, Latvia makes for an appealingly alternative summer holiday. Its landscape unfurls in a haze of wildflower meadows and moss-furred forest, with boardwalks leading over wetlands and stork-fished lakes. It’s a country for slow travel, for cycle rides, birdwatching and hiking. In the south, Rundāle Palace appears, seemingly conjured by a genie amid patchwork fields – a miniature Versailles from the architect of St Petersburg’s Winter Palace. Riga, the capital, is a pretty town of high-gabled buildings, cobbled streets and Zeppelin hangers that now house a lively food market. With a new rail route linking the city with Vilnius, Latvia is emerging as one of Europe’s most endearing destinations.
