Ushuaia

An early morning flight from Buenos Aires brought us to Ushuaia, the southern most city in the world. It was a beautiful, warm day and the snow-capped mountains formed a picturesque backdrop to this city of approximately 45,000 inhabitants.

Later in the afternoon, we were welcomed onboard Minerva with champagne and afternoon tea. There was leisure time to explore the layout of the ship and relax in our cabins before Captain Biasutti called us for the mandatory Emergency Drill in which we learned how to gather at our muster station and put on lifejackets. Afterwards our cruise director, Jannie Cloete, introduced us to the ship and the expedition staff.

We sailed just before dinner and headed east through the Beagle Channel on the first leg of our adventure. Outside the setting sun bathed the mountains and forested hills in a golden light while inside the ship there was much excited conversation and new friendships formed around the dinner table.
