Overview
Travel with expert naturalists and guides aboard MV 'Le Boreal' to observe the wildlife and marine life of the South Atlantic. On this mission trip, visit a working scientific station and present the research team with highly specialized scientific research equipment specifically requested by the Palmer Station field Long-term environmental research team. This equipment will provide critical information for ongoing studies on the dramatic impacts of climate change on the environment and wildlife communities along the Antarctic Peninsula.
Your Guide, Dr. James McClintock
Our December 7, 2010 departure will be A&K's third annual Philanthropic Journey Mission trip led by award-winning author, scientist, and professor of Polar and Marine Biology at the University of Alabama - Birmingham, Dr. James McClintock.
Dr. McClintock has been conducting research in polar waters for more than twenty years. When the world experienced the break-out of the Wilkins Ice Shelf this April, the press solicited and shared his knowledge and insight. "With rapid warming now well documented on the Antarctic Peninsula, the break-out of the Wilkins Ice Shelf over the past few days raises the number of major ice sheet break-outs to occur along the Antarctic Peninsula to nine over the past fifty years! The increasing disintegration of major ice sheets along the Peninsula is being accompanied by a similar rapid retreat in the annual sea ice, the full extent of which has receded some 40% over the past quarter century. With changes in the ice come changes in the organisms that are interwoven into the rich marine coastal ecosystems of the Antarctic Peninsula. Organisms ranging from the smallest plankton to penguins, seals and the largest whales are being impacted, especially those who depend on the sea-ice dependent krill (small shrimp-like organisms) as a primary food source."
Along with Dr. McClintock, the expedition team will feature noted scientists, naturalists, researchers and historians who will lecture on wide ranging topics related to the issues of climate change, ecology, marine biology wildlife and history.
