Day 1: Arrive Beijing, China

Arrive in Beijing, China’s political and cultural hub. Transfer to your luxurious hotel.

Day 2: Beijing | Adventure at the Great Wall

Travel to the less-visited Mutianyu section of the magnificent Great Wall of China, which you walk along as great warriors once did, before hopping in a toboggan for an exciting ride back down. Later, view the Beijing National Stadium, also known as the “Bird’s Nest,” and the National Aquatics Center, dubbed the “Water Cube.” Gather for a cocktail and a welcome dinner at your hotel.

Day 3: Beijing | Tai Chi & Kung Fu

Start the day as many locals do: with a morning tai chi class for the family, which you experience at the Temple of Heaven. Ride Like a Local with an exciting pedicab ride through a maze of winding alleyways known as a hutong. After lunch, walk in the footsteps of emperors in the Forbidden City and wander Tiananmen Square. Tonight, take in a thrilling kung fu show.

Day 4: Xian | The Art of Dumpling Making

Fly to Xian and enjoy lunch. Then, enter the Ancient Gate of Xian’s City Wall and stroll along its ramparts above the city. Tonight, a fun culinary adventure awaits with Family Chef Time at a local restaurant, where you learn to make traditional dumplings.

Day 5: Xian | The Emperor’s Ancient Army

Play archaeologist today with a visit to the site of the legendary Terra Cotta Warriors, where thousands of life-size ceramic soldiers who “guard” the tomb of China’s first emperor continue to be unearthed. Later, visit a pottery factory to make your own clay soldier, part of a special Artisan Visit. Fly to Chengdu.

Day 6: Chengdu | Face to Face with Giant Pandas

In the morning, visit the Chengdu Panda Breeding and Research Center, where you encounter the adorable panda bear — China’s living national emblem — in a beautiful, sprawling habitat. Later, attend the Sichuan Opera for a dazzling “face-changing” performance.

Day 7: Chengdu/Chongqing | Bullet Train Ride

Enjoy your morning at leisure before hopping on a high-speed train for a ride through the Chinese countryside to Chongqing, where you embark on your luxury river cruiser, ‘Yangzi Explorer,’ for a three-night journey to Yichang. Settle into your cabin as the ship sails downstream to the stunning Three Gorges region. Tonight, watch a fascinating documentary on the Three Gorges Dam Project in the ship’s Tang Theater.

Day 8: Cruising the Yangtze | Asia’s Great River

Start your morning with traditional Chinese exercise and work up an appetite for the buffet breakfast. Then, disembark and enjoy a shore excursion to Fengdu, where you take in local life on a visit to a village relocated to make way for the Three Gorges Dam Project. Meet with a local family, visit a kindergarten and enjoy a kaleidoscope of sights at the farmers market. This afternoon, learn about Chinese traditional medicine and reflexology. This evening, attend the Captain’s Reception.

Day 9: Cruising the Yangtze | The Three Gorges

Early this morning, ‘Yangzi Explorer’ navigates the Qutang and Wu Gorges before anchoring at Badong, where you board a ferry and travel up the Shennong Stream. Transfer to “pea pod” boats poled by Tujia boatmen to view the scenic Bamboo Gorge. The Tujia are members of a local minority culture famed for their boat-building skills and keen knowledge of the Yangtze. Return to ‘Yangzi Explorer’ by ferryboat, accompanied by a Tujia boat tracker who shares insights into his daily life. Tonight, savor a “Taste of China” dinner, followed by onboard entertainment.

Day 10: Yichang/Shanghai | Disembark ‘Yangzi Explorer’

Arrive at the Three Gorges Project Dam Site and Exhibition Center to learn the history of the world’s largest dam, including the story of the resettlement of the 1.2 million residents of the cities submerged behind the 400-foot-tall engineering marvel. Disembark in Yichang around midday, and fly to Shanghai this evening. Upon arrival, transfer to your elegant hotel, located on the city’s historic Bund.

Day 11: Shanghai | Where Old Meets New

This morning, take part in an interactive kung fu class. Then, pass through the Bund Sightseeing Tunnel by electric cart and visit Shanghai Tower for more remarkable vistas of action-packed Shanghai. Step back in time with a stroll in Old Town and a visit to the beautiful Yu Garden. Tonight, gather for a farewell dinner.

Day 12: Depart Shanghai

After breakfast, transfer to the airport and depart for home.
