Day 5: San Gimignano/Siena | Idyllic Small Towns

Set out this morning for the picturesque medieval town of San Gimignano, where you explore on your own, perhaps visiting the Collegiata, with its 15th-century frescoes; the Palazzo del Popolo, now the municipal museum; or the Church of Sant'Agostino. Continue to scenic Siena for a guided walking tour. View the Piazza del Campo, one of the finest main squares in Italy. Visit Siena's Duomo and see the unforgettable frescoes in the Piccolomini Library.

Day 6: Southern Tuscany | Insider Access with Cheese Tasting

Travel southeast to Pienza and view its Renaissance city center, designed by native son Pope Pius II. Proceed to nearby Montepulciano, an archetypal Tuscan hilltop town, for superb views over the surrounding countryside. Enjoy a tasting of some wonderful regional wines, and visit a typical Tuscan farmhouse in nearby Val d’Orcia for a private Ricotta cheese-making demonstration followed by a tasting.

Day 7: Chianti/Florence | Scenic Countryside Drive

Venture into the Chianti region today, in the beautiful Tuscan countryside, renowned for its art, history and evocative landscapes. Journey past hill-towns encircled by Etruscan walls and slender cypress trees, venturing among vineyards and olive groves, farmhouses, villas and castles. Stop for a Chianti wine tasting at a local vineyard as you wind your way to Florence.

Day 8: Pisa | The Famous Leaning Tower

Today, visit Pisa, viewing its iconic Leaning Tower, which you may choose to climb (minimum age 8 years); the magnificent 11th-century Duomo (cathedral), a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture; and the austerely beautiful Baptistry. Although less so than the tower, the Duomo and the Baptistry both have a lean — as do other buildings in Pisa — due to the unsteady soil rich in ground water. Enjoy lunch at leisure before returning to Florence.
