Cuba: A People to People Journey Through Havana

Day 1: ARRIVE MIAMI, FLORIDA

Arrive at Miami International Airport, where you are met and transferred to your hotel. Meet your accompanying Abercrombie & Kent Program Director at a briefing reception this evening.

Day 2: HAVANA, CUBA / Experiencing a Paladar

Transfer to Miami International Airport and check in with VIP assistance for your short charter flight to Cuba. Upon arrival at José Martí International Airport in Havana, complete immigration and customs formalities and meet your guide. Begin your experience in Havana with a tour of Revolution Square and the city’s historic neighborhoods and visit Hotel Nacional for a mojito and narrative on its fascinating past. Considered a national monument, the hotel was built in 1930 and overlooks the Malecón (seaside promenade) and Havana Harbor. Have lunch before checking in to your hotel. Tonight, enjoy dinner at a private paladar.

Day 3: HAVANA / Hemingway Connection

Meet a local physician and participate in an informative discussion about Cuba’s well-regarded public health care system. Visit a local day care center, where you talk with teachers and children. Continue to Finca La Vigia, Ernest Hemingway’s former home, where The Old Man and the Sea and For Whom the Bell Tolls were penned. Visit a local artist in his home, a chance to not only learn about Cuban art but home and family life as well. Light appetizers and drinks will be served. After this visit, sit down to dinner at a local paladar.

Day 4: HAVANA / U.S. & Cuban Relations

Today’s introduction to historic Havana begins with a brief discussion led by a Cuba policy expert on Cuba-U.S. relations, from the colonial era to the present day. Take part in a thought-provoking question and answer session. Attend a private performance at the Habana Compas Dance Studio, followed by an opportunity to engage the dancers, who bring the Afro-Cuban rhythms to life. After lunch, attend a cigar-rolling demonstration and rum sampling. Later, meet a local salsa instructor to talk about the history of this native rhythm and the importance of dance in Cuban life, followed by a refreshing mojito and lesson under your instructor’s attentive eye.

Day 5: HAVANA / Architecture & the Arts

Meet a local architect in Old Havana and stroll through town as you discuss the challenges and successes of city reconstruction projects and see the stunning, historic architecture that surrounds you. After lunch, pay a visit to Colon Cemetery, where you learn about its history and significance alongside a local specialist. Founded in 1876, it is the site of more than 800,000 graves and one million interments. Tonight, drive in “Yank tanks” (vintage cars) along the Malecón to the Magic Flute, where you enjoy panoramic views of Havana and a private concert sponsored by the Cuban Institute of Music.

Day 6: DEPART HAVANA

Transfer to the airport, where you have access to the VIP Lounge before departure. Board your return flight to Miami.

Deviation from this itinerary, even in part, is not permitted. Per the general license requirements, this is a full-time program with many inclusions and there will be little to no free time on most days of the program.
