Day 2: Jerash | Street of Columns

Take a step back in time and visit Jerash, the third-century “Pompeii of the Middle East,” decimated by invasion and earthquake. Once a city thriving under the Roman Empire, its hills have revealed Neolithic, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad-era remains. Explore its colonnaded streets, which show grooves of chariot wheels to this day. Proceed to Amman, visiting its historic downtown, Citadel, the remains of a small Byzantine basilica, the Great Temple of Amman and the Roman Theater.

Continue to the Qumran Caves, where the Dead Sea scrolls were found. Check in to your Jerusalem hotel. Absorb panoramic views from atop the Mount of Olives before continuing to the Garden of Gethsemane, where Jesus purportedly prayed with his disciples before his crucifixion. In the Old City, visit the Western Wall, El Aksa Mosque and Dome of the Rock. Travel along the Via Dolorosa, the street traversed by Jesus when he was bearing the cross, passing the Convent of Zion Sisters, where Pontius Pilate tried Jesus; the cistern; and lithostrotos (pavement), with evidence of soldiers’ games. Proceed through the Stations of the Cross, seeing bazaars and continuing to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, site of Jesus’ crucifixion, burial and resurrection. The next day, see Yad Vashem, site of the Jewish people’s memorial to lives lost to the Holocaust. Visit its museum before witnessing the Knesset — Israel’s Parliament — en route to the Israel Museum, where the Dead Sea Scrolls are kept.
