Tailor Made Wildlife & the Golden Triangle

Day 1: Arrive Mumbai, India

Upon arrival in Mumbai, you are met and transferred to your hotel. Once the stronghold of the British East India Company, Mumbai is the financial and commercial capital of India.

The Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai

Day 2: Mumbai | Cave Temples

Set out on a boat ride across Mumbai Harbour to Elephanta Island (the “City of Caves”), a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Climb the steps to view intricately carved temples, dating back to the 7th century. Upon returning to Mumbai, see the Gateway of India, an 85-foot-high arch whose design reflects India’s Muslim and Hindu traditions; the Prince of Wales Museum; and Mani Bhawan, a museum dedicated to the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi. Next, see the vibrant Dhobi Ghat, the world’s largest open-air laundry.

Days 3-4: Pench National Park | Kipling’s Inspiration

Fly to Nagpur, where you are met and transferred overland to your lodge near Pench National Park. Made famous by Rudyard Kipling’s classic tale, The Jungle Book, the area’s resident wildlife includes tigers, leopards, sloth bears, sambars, chitals, wild dogs, Malabar pied hornbills and grey hornbills. Keep watch as you embark on morning and afternoon game drives. Between wildlife viewing, opt to take a cooking class or go for a dip in the pool.

Days 5-6: Kanha National Park | Wildlife Viewing

After a morning game drive, proceed to your lodge at lush Kanha National Park. Punctuated by bamboo forests, ravines, streams and open stretches of grasslands, it hosts tigers, herds of chital, blackbucks, gaurs, leopards, hyenas, sloth bears and more than 150 species of birds. The park is also known for successfully rescuing the swamp deer, or Barasingha, from the brink of extinction. At sunset, head up to Bamni Dadar for breathtaking views. Spend the following day on morning and afternoon game drives.

Days 7-8: Bandhavgarh National Park | Abundant Flora & Fauna

After a morning game drive, proceed overland to Bandhavgarh National Park. Formerly the private reserve of the Maharaja of Rewa, it is one of the best sites on the subcontinent for tiger viewing. Keep your eyes peeled for these elusive creatures during game drives amid rocky hills, grassy swamps and forested valleys. Watch, too, for leopards, wild boars, Indian gazelles, rhesus monkeys and more than 150 species of birds, including around ancient Bandhavgarh Fort. Reached after a steep climb, the ruins are gradually being reclaimed by the forest, while providing shelter for wildlife, such as black bucks.

The following morning, discover Old Delhi, seeing the open-air Jama Masjid mosque; the imposing Red Fort with its marble-paneled alcove set with precious stones; and the bustling, colorful Chandni Chowk bazaar. After lunch at a local restaurant, traverse New Delhi, established as the new capital for the Indian Empire by King George V. See the broad Rajpath; the India Gate, a stone arch of triumph; and Rashtrapati Bhawan, the official residence of the President of India. Days 13-14: Jaipur | The “Pink City”

Return to the beautiful Taj Mahal as the sun rises, glinting gold on the marble and surrounding water. Then, drive overland through local villages to Jaipur, stopping en-route at the deserted hill-top city of Fatehpur Sikri. Wander through its beautifully preserved palaces and red sandstone courtyards and see the Bulund Darwaza (“Gate of Magnificence”). Arrive at your hotel by early evening and take time to relax. The next morning, discover the Amber Fort, a fortified palace that was once the capital of the state of Jaipur. Continue to Jantar Mantar, an 18th-century observatory built to measure time, predict eclipses and track stars and planets.
