Day 2: Amman | History and the Hejaz Railway

See Amman, and have lunch at the most popular falafel restaurant among locals. Ride the Hejaz Railway, the focus of Lawrence’s daring guerrilla campaign. Drive to the Greco- Roman city of Jerash, where remains from Neolithic, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad times were found. Attend a welcome dinner.

Day 3: Desert Castles | Mighty Structures

See the Qasr el-Kharaneah, purportedly used as a caravansary; frescoed Qasr Amra, a former bathhouse that Sheriff Hussein and T.E. Lawrence used as desert headquarters during World War I; and black basalt Qal’at el-Azraq, which Lawrence used as a military base during the Arab Revolt against the Turks in 1917. Then, visit the ancient ruins of Umm el-Jimal, where Lawrence staged his first attack in the Ottoman stronghold of Damascus in 1918.

Day 4: Madaba | Marvelous Mosaics

Drive along Kings Highway, an ancient frankincense route used by pilgrims and prophets. Arrive at Mount Nebo, where Moses glimpsed the Holy Land he would never enter. Absorb views of Jordan, the Dead Sea and Israel, continuing to Madaba to see its Byzantine mosaics. At the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George, see the sixth-century map of Jerusalem. Continue to the wildlife-rich Dana Nature Reserve.

Day 5: Petra | The Rose-Red City

Explore Petra, the once-thriving capital carved into red rock. It was conquered by the Romans, later abandoned by all but the Bedouins and lost to Westerners until 1812. Pass through the siq to the Treasury, Temple of the Winged Lions and the Palace Tomb. Attend a Chef’s Table dinner, working aside local women and an experienced chef.

Day 6: Wadi Rum | Valley of the Moon

Discover Little Petra, once inhabited by the Nabataeans. After seeing its tombs, water containers and channels, continue to Wadi Rum, the so-called “Valley of the Moon” and the site of your desert camp. This otherworldly landscape was the setting for the 1962 film Lawrence of Arabia and the location where T.E. Lawrence lived with his Bedouin allies. Take to the dunes by 4x4 vehicle alongside a native Bedouin guide, pausing to hike through canyons and ascend Um Ad Dami for Red Sea views. Meet the Zalabia Bedouins, descendants of the tribesmen who joined Lawrence in revolt. Then, sit down to a Bedouin meal at your camp. You may watch the David Lean film where it was made and Lawrence camped.

Days 7-8: Aqaba | Camel Ride to the Red Sea

Ride a camel or drive to Aqaba. Poised at the trade routes from Asia, Africa and Europe, it is the site of the Aqaba Fort where Lawrence and his Arab allies stormed on camel back in 1917. The next day, visit Aqaba Castle, scene of a July 1916 Arab victory, when this heavily defended Turkish stronghold fell to a daring Arab camel charge. Lawrence rode from here to Cairo to report the good news to General Allenby. Visit Aqaba Archaeological Museum, and sail the Red Sea by small boat, with Scenic Sundowner cocktails and views of Jordan, Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Day 9: Dead Sea | Restorative Waters

Drive to the Dead Sea, earth’s lowest point. Offering the highest content of minerals and salts in the world, its water possesses anti-inflammatory properties, and the mud on its shores has been used for therapeutic purposes for over 2,000 years. Proceed to Amman, visiting Darat el-Funun, where it’s believed Lawrence wrote The Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Tonight, attend a farewell dinner.
