Family Kenya Safari (2016)
Limited to 18 guests
Days: 9 | From: $7,395
Day 1: Arrive Nairobi, Kenya
Arrive in Nairobi, the first stop on your journey through the wilds of Kenya. Here you will discover baby elephants, watch lions on the hunt and meet an African tribe in their own village.
Day 2: Nairobi | Magical Meetings with Resident Wildlife
Start your day at the Giraffe Center, home to the endangered, graceful Rothschild giraffe. Offer them food while perched upon a platform, watching as they gently snatch it from your hand with their long, blue tongues. Continue to Daphne Sheldrick’s Orphanage to see small elephants cared for by attentive keepers, who also explain their phased reintroduction to the wild and Tsavo National Park. You may see elephant calves bathing in the mud hole and being bottlefed by human surrogate mothers. An Artisan Visit awaits at Kazuri, a jewelry workshop created by and for women with the mission of employing disadvantaged members of Kenyan society. Tonight, gather with other families sharing in your safari adventure for a festive welcome dinner.

Day 3: Nanyuki | Abundant Game Viewing
Drive to the Sweetwaters Reserve within the Ol Pejeta Conservancy at the foot of Mount Kenya. Set out in safari vehicles in search of animals or, at an additional cost, take an escorted bush walk or thrilling night game drive. You may even view game from your tent, which overlooks a flooded watering hole and salt lick frequented by the local wildlife. Sweetwaters is an excellent place to see two of Africa’s most endangered species: black rhino and chimpanzee. Meet both when you visit a chimpanzee and rhino sanctuary, each set within the conservancy. Prepare to be taken by sweet Baraka, a black rhino that you may feed from a protected platform. In the evening, your private veranda provides a front-row seat to the nocturnal creatures moving in and out of the shadows to quench their thirst at the water’s edge.

Day 4: Samburu Game Reserve | Heart of the Bush
Travel to the bush of the Samburu Game Reserve, where you find a comfortable tented camp perched along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River. This river is the lifeline of the reserve and animals congregate along its banks. Between game drives, young guests won’t lack for interesting things to do: activities include tree identification, mammal behavior studies and identification, an animal obstacle course, fire-making techniques and bush treasure hunts, all led by the Young Explorers Guide.

Day 5: Samburu Game Reserve | Village Visit
The reserve is also home to the nomadic Samburu people who live a pastoral, herding life. Following an early-morning game drive, take a camel ride across the Ewaso Nyiro River, on the lookout for towering giraffes or tiny dik-diks. Arrive at the Samburu village, where you learn about the tribe’s unique way of life. Back at camp, choose to explore the fascinating subtleties of the terrain on a guided, gametracking walk. Soccer, treasure hunts and painting are among the other activities children may enjoy.

Days 6-8: Masai Mara Game Reserve | “Big Five” Discovery
Fly to the Masai Mara, land of the red-robed Maasai tribes, and arrive at your luxury tented camp. Spend the next three days in this magnificent savanna country, embarking on morning and afternoon game drives in search of Africa’s “Big Five” — buffalo, elephants, rhinos, lions and leopards. Learn the art of bead- and leatherwork, as well as basic bush survival skills, such as how to throw a spear or start a fire with sticks. Take an optional hot air balloon safari, an amazing experience your family will never forget. At night, watch a display of traditional Maasai song and dance. End your stay in the Mara with a farewell dinner.
Pay a meaningful visit to a primary school supported by A&K Philanthropy, where your family may interact with students when school is in session.
