Day 2: Châteaux of the Loire Valley

Join your driver-guide and travel to the east of Onzain to explore a few of the Loire Valley's delightful châteaux. With pride of place in the town center, the Château de Blois comprises several buildings built in the Classical, Renaissance and Gothic styles around a central courtyard. Home to seven kings and ten queens of France, Blois also saw Joan of Arc be blessed in 1429 prior to driving the English out of Orléans. Continue to the largest of the Loire châteaux, the Château de Chambord. Built to serve as a hunting lodge to King François I, this immense Renaissance château features 440 rooms, 282 fireplaces, and 84 staircases and is located in the heart of Europe's largest enclosed wooded parkland. Finally, visit the privately-owned Château de Cheverny, a stately home that has remained in the same family for over 600 years. It is distinctive from all other Loire châteaux as it appears untouched by the Renaissance; there is a distinct sense of time-travel as the building today remains as it was built originally, and the interior reflects a living history of the generations of the family.

Day 3: Loire Valley/Tours

Explore the medieval city of Tours and its nearby châteaux today with your driver-guide. Start at Azay-le-Rideau, to admire the 16th-century château, built on an island in the River Indre, and set in its own enchanting private park. The château was constructed using a combination of the latest French building techniques and innovative designs from Italy, and remains a dazzling example of the Renaissance period. Next, you visit the famous gardens at Villandry, a French-style garden reflecting 16th-century aristocratic style. The skillful gardeners mix flowers and vegetables in strict geometric patterns with fascinating results. The garden is on three levels, with a water garden with ancient lime trees, a flower garden with the château itself and the world's largest ornamental kitchen garden. Continue to Tours, a city built on the confluence of the Loire and the Cher rivers. Here you may like to explore the medieval Old Town, with its half-timbered houses, narrow streets and charming squares, or enjoy some time for shopping before returning to your hotel.
