Itinerary

Day 1

Cross 2,500 miles of the Pacific Ocean to arrive at Easter Island. Remote Rapa Nui — Easter Island’s name in the local language — lies between Tahiti and South America, and its traditions and relics reflect the unique culture that developed here centuries ago. Upon arrival, you are welcomed with a traditional floral collar reception.

Day 2

Stop at Rano Raraku volcano, where 95 percent of the iconic moai statues were carved. There are over 880 of these colossal, solemn-faced statues peppering the island, with the tallest one reaching 33 feet in height. It is estimated that they were constructed between 1250 and 1500. Continue to Ahu Tongariki, which holds a row of 15 moai. After lunch on the beach, proceed to Vaitea.

Day 3

See stone walls in Ahu Vinapu and proceed up the Rano Kau volcano to Orongo, where cliffs are adorned with petroglyphs of the “Bird Man” rituals. These rituals were part of a cult that began in the mid-16th century, and the petroglyphs closely resemble ones found in Hawaii, indicating the strong cultural connection between the islands.

Day 4

Trek or ride horseback from Ahu Akivi to Maunga Terevaka, the largest of the three extinct volcanoes on Easter Island, for a bird’s-eye view of the lush landscapes below. Otherwise, you might hike to Ana te Pahu, a huge cave complex, and explore its nooks and crannies.
