The Africa you Imagine
Unexpected Luxury Redefines the Classic Tented Safari Experience
Abercrombie & Kent has reinvented the original tented safari with modern-day amenities to provide guests with the ultimate and yet most authentic safari. These spacious new bush pavilions, described by Business Week as “glamping,” bring a new level of comfort to mobile camping in the most beautiful, game-rich corners of East Africa: the Masai Mara, Laikipia Plateau and Samburu in Kenya and the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania. The huge verandah-fronted tents are made from heavy duty canvas, 28 feet long by 14 feet wide and 9 feet high, with a sewn-in floor and large arched windows made of netting. The luxurious bedding is 100% Egyptian cotton with duvets for cool nights. Each tent is furnished with two full-size single beds with bedside tables; a dressing table with mirror and wash basin with running water; and private en suite shower and toilet (A&K is one of very few travel companies to offer flush toilets in mobile tented camps in East Africa). The custom made rugs and Kuba cloth pillows are authentic African designs, the product of a laborious technique that involves dying, detailed needlework and clipping individual tufts.
In the remote and pristine campsites used by Abercrombie & Kent, your professional safari guide and driver, camp staff and travelling companions are likely to be the only people you see from day to day. Because your camp is mobile and self-sufficient, you aren't restricted to locations with game lodges. On private land, game walks, horse- and camel-back safaris, and fascinating night game drives are possible. Other activities may include fishing on Lake Victoria, bird watching and hot-air ballooning.
“This type of travel is extremely eco-friendly, from solar lighting in each tent to local in-season produce at every meal,” says Toby Fenwick-Wilson, a Private Label Guide for Abercrombie & Kent. “The camp is completely mobile, allowing us to go where the game is and yet leave the environment as unspoiled as we found it. Our ethos is ‘explore new ground, don’t break it.’”
Camp cuisine is excellent and served at linen-draped tables set with crystal, china and candles. The safari bar is fully stocked with personal selections. Two staff members for every guest ensure attentive service that is personalized, yet unobtrusive. There is even an efficient in-camp laundry service.
Abercrombie & Kent built its award-winning reputation by introducing guests to the wonders of African wildlife, while providing a standard of hospitality unheard of in the bush. Since then, A&K has grown to more than 18 offices in Africa, from Cairo to Cape Town, all committed to one immutable standard: “simply the best.” Carefully planned itineraries are led by multilingual professional guides with an intimate knowledge of local flora and fauna. Drivers are trained in A&K’s own schools. A&K’s custom built four-wheel-drive vehicles provide added space and comfort, with better sightlines and a guaranteed window seat.
Described by the Los Angeles Times as "a highly respected company dedicated to conservation and environmentally intelligent tourism in Africa," Abercrombie & Kent was voted “World’s Best Tour Operator – International” by Travel Weekly and Porthole and“Best Tour Operator – Africa/Middle East” by Travel Weekly, Recommend and TravelAge West. Forbes Magazine described A&K's Web site as "a shot of adventure and luxury….the site to visit if you picture yourself traversing the Serengeti on the back of an elephant -- or in the back of a Land Rover."
