Explore the World’s Most Biologically Diverse Island
Discover Remote South Georgia with Abercrombie & Kent in Antarctica
Antarctica’s South Georgia Island is considered the “Galápagos of the Southern Atlantic Ocean” for its astonishing biodiversity. Recent reports indicate that it may be the most biologically diverse island on earth, thanks to its remote location at the crossroads of warm and cold ocean currents which bring together unique animals that would otherwise live a world apart. Abercrombie & Kent offers two different opportunities to visit South Georgia, along with Antarctica & the Falkland Islands, in 2013/2014 aboard the luxury adventure cruise ship, ‘Le Boreal.’ A third departure is devoted to the Antarctic Peninsula and the impact of climate change.

Fighting Climate Change in Antarctica (December 11-22, 2013)
Professor James McClintock, noted Antarctic researcher and author of Lost Antarctica, lauded by Edward O. Wilson and Bill Gates, leads this philanthropic journey. Meet scientists as we deliver critical research equipment and get a behind-the-scenes tour of Palmer Station. On board, Dr. McClintock will share tales from 25 years of research and diving adventures, which led to his discovery of an anti-cancer compound.
Award-winning scientists like Dr. McClintock and the rest of A&K’s expedition team are why this journey has been recommended by Travel + Leisure as a “Trip of a Lifetime” and Abercrombie & Kent described as "still the one to beat for high-quality, hands-on exploration" by Condé Nast Traveler.

Hands-On Exploration with the Finest Guides
Abercrombie & Kent’s Antarctica cruises are led by top geologists, ornithologists, historians, wildlife photographers and marine biologists who give enriching lectures and provide hands-on guidance both on board and on shore, ranging from the practical (how to master your digital camera) to the personal (a first-hand account of overwintering on a remote Sub-Antarctic island). Zodiac drivers are certified field naturalists who provide knowledgeable commentary on twice-daily excursions into the heart of this once-in-a-lifetime destination.
Abercrombie & Kent has an immaculate safety record, successfully operating more than 175 expeditions in over 20 years of Antarctic cruising, and is full member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators. ‘Le Boreal’ employs the latest environmental practices and technology including a computerized dynamic positioning system that eliminates the need to drop anchor in fragile marine reserves. Zodiac boats are equipped with fuel efficient four stroke engines that meet the strictest environmental standards. The ship has been “Cleanship” certified by the Bureau Veritas, a label awarded only to ships whose design and equipment limit the emission of polluting substances in water and air, and who go beyond the MARPOL convention for waste treatment, antifouling and propulsion systems.
The most-inclusive way to experience Antarctica, Abercrombie & Kent’s journeys include pre- and post-cruise lodging and sightseeing in Buenos Aires, charter flights to and from Ushuaia, on-board lectures, twice-daily shore excursions, boot rental, most drinks, and crew and staff gratuities.
