Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy: Committed to Worldwide Conservation
A deep-rooted concern for the natural world infuses each and every Abercrombie & Kent journey. We believe passionately that travel should both respect the natural environment and benefit indigenous peoples whose lands we visit. Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy (AKP), guided by Vice Chairman Jorie Butler Kent, facilitates our commitment to socially and ecologically responsible travel worldwide, as well as helping our guests to become actively involved in these efforts.
Philanthropic Travel
Each of Abercrombie & Kent's offices worldwide plays a hands-on role in its community, sponsoring an on-site project that both benefits people and the environment. Select A&K journeys include opportunities for travelers to personally visit these projects.
"We place great importance on enabling guests to become personally involved in the lives of the people they meet. These experiences -- which bridge vastly different cultures -- are usually the first stories our guests share when they return home." Jorie Butler Kent, Vice Chairman of Abercrombie & Kent.
For guests interested in more in-depth philanthropic experiences, AKP has designed journeys focused on conservation – cultural and ecological – and humanitarian efforts.
East Africa has been at the heart of Abercrombie & Kent's philanthropic efforts since Friends of Conservation was founded by Jorie Butler Kent more than a quarter century ago. With support from AKP, Conservation Clubs in 50 area schools bring the message of conservation to more than 5,000 Maasai children, who have planted more than 250,000 native seedlings to provide shade, serve as windbreaks, enrich the soil and regulate water run-off. A Forestry Program reduces the burden on existing forest resources, further helped by a biogas demonstration plant, which uses cow dung to generate clean, renewable energy.
Through efforts like these, Abercrombie & Kent is committed to providing the most fulfilling and rewarding travel experiences in the world, while assuring our guests that their journey helps to preserve some of the world's most extraordinary places for future generations.
Myanmar Relief Fund
In May 2008, Cyclone Nargis devastated Myanmar's Irawaddy Delta region. With international aid trickling in, Abercrombie & Kent's offices in Myanmar, Thailand and Hong Kong quickly mobilized teams to gather and deliver essential supplies to affected villages. Abercrombie & Kent Philanthropy immediately donated funds and reached out to friends and family for assistance. To date, we have received $450,000 in contributions. This has allowed us to provide ongoing support including donating tractors and rice to prevent crop shortages and "adopting" several suddenly-overflowing orphanages.
